I performed this during the Northdale Concert Band performance at Hope United Church in Toronto (Sunday March 8, 2009). The concert band version is a half step down from the orchestral, due to the pure nature of a concert band. Sorry this recording isn't the best in the world...and I had a couple of hicc-ups due to variations in temperature in the sanctuary of the church so I mistakenly had a couple of tuning issues and hiccups...ah the horn! (please don't hold it against me! :S).

Anyways, it is a very nice band arrangement and there aren't that many solos out there for French horn and band (that aren't transcriptions of concertos). I'll post a solo I performed last summer with the North York Concert Band, it's an Eddy Graf arrangement (something completely different!).

Conductor: Stephen Chennette (Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto, International Trumpet Guild Past President, CBA Ontario Board)

  • You have know reason to put down your performance. This is my all time favorite piece to perform and you did an EXCEPTIONAL job, as well as your second horn. This is one of the most beautiful works to feature the horn. It is a must for all horn players to perform at some point in their career. Well done and I thank you for the performance.

Just heard Prof. Chennette say Lincolnshire at the end of the recording. Did you play Lincolnshire Posey as well? Great horn lines in that one!!

  • @akrukowski1964 Thank-you for your kind words. Yes, we did play Lincolnshire as well. :)

  • is the beginning note F for horn?

  • Yes, it starts on an F.

  • I see. that's the arrangement I have too. Such a beautiful peace.

  • It is, and it is a nice concert band arrangement. It's not overscored like so many transcriptions. It took a bit to wrap my ears around it as I've done the original orchestral one (don't have a recording of it unfortunately). I guess the reason would be because the original and this are only a semi-tone apart.
