I don't split lanes on the streets ,the chances of a pedestrian popping out behind a car is too big , add, the chances of someone opening a door (I have seen people drop off passengers in the middle of a light stop) or someone sticking their arm out are about 300% bigger on the street than on a freeway , in the freeway I say go for it and just stare at the tires carefully as long as the cars are not moving faster than 20 mph ...been doing it for 6 months on my 250 for over 8000 miles np..
