That sound is actualy an error sound used in windows 3.1 up to xo, its a doo-doo. Often seen with an error popup.

A way to meet people you wouldn't normally find out on the street. A unique experience.

This is the main reason that old school bbs'ers at least to a small degree dislike the internet. Back then interacting was something special between a small set of people who had to have some knowledge to access these features.

Today any idiot [and there are many of them] with a $30/m internet account can be on 24/7 acting like a dipshit.

I remember a favorite BBS in my area where we'd all illegally share software :D This BBS introduced me to DOOM and people in the area to play it with.
