The Ortner-Roberts Duo performs "Nigun di Savannah" at 3rd Street Gallery, Carnegie, PA, August 16th 08.
The song "Nigun di Zaposkelekh" is from the repertoire of the Ukrainian dancer and singer Bronya Sakina (1910-1988) . Traditionally, it is performed in the style of a hora. The Ortner-Roberts Duo has chosen their own way. After Susanne's reverential opening statement, the tune floats through the cosmos. The artists get back down to earth and enter the realm of New Orleans goslpel , as typified by the playing of the great New Orleans R&B pianist James Booker. The tune takes an unexpected turn as it delves into one of the most beloved pieces of Yiddish Theater repertoire: "Georgia auf Meinen Kopf", written by the Ukrainian composer Shloimke Carmichaelvitz. Oy Vey, Ray!
