Entrepreneur sells off private collection of Lowry paintings to raise £5m for RSPCA
His work was celebrated in the 1978 chart-topping song Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs, by the 'Houghton Weavers'.
And yesterday L.S. Lowry did a little bit more to help his four-legged friends after a private collection of paintings by the late Lancashire artist sold for more than £5million at auction.
Part of the proceeds from the sale are being donated to the RSPCA to help the charity in its work saving destitute animals.
The paintings and drawings by the Lancashire-born artist were described as 'the most extensive overview of Lowry's work ever to come to auction' by Christie's in London, where the sale took place yesterday.
They were owned by bookmaking tycoon Selwyn Demmy, who decided to put the collection of 21 works up for auction to raise money for animal welfare.
Laurence Stephen Lowry (1 November 1887 -- 23 February 1976) was an English artist born in Barrett Street, Stretford, Lancashire. Many of his drawings and paintings depict nearbySalford and surrounding areas, including Pendlebury, where he lived and worked for over 40 years at 117 Station Road opposite St. Mark's RC Church, Manchester.

  • Dear Viewers,

I wish to apologise for the incorrect soundtrack for the 'Lowry' vid. If it is any consolation (now my old brain cells have been prompted) I much prefer the the Brian and Michael version.

Many years ago when I was growing up in the North West of England my art tutor was actually taught art by Lowry himself in Salford.

Once again please accept my apologies.

All my very good wishes, Stegski

  • No no, The Houghton Weavers don't figure.

This is just a cover version.

  • This Houghton Weavers version of the song was just a copy

The big number number one hit was by Brian and Michael, who were also the writers.
