Take a second to actually read statistics before coming to false conclusions (aka, personal opinions.) The statistics are quite revealing that cycling on a side walk accounts for over half of bicycle fatalities because car drivers do not pay attention to side walks.

I've studied bicycle safety and facility designs, urban planning, and am a member (board member of one) of several professional bicycle organizations. If you want sources, just ask.

Yeah, well, car drivers run stop signs, red lights, and speed 24/7 . . . . Good logic.

I, along with many of my cyclists friends, stop at red lights, stop signs etc. We're also responsible for educating those in our communities along with our local PD that bikes belong AND how to ride safely and legally on the road. Matter of fact, tomorrow I'm spending all day training new comer cyclists how to properly ride on the roads.

Give me a f-ing brake LOL. So were are you from, because it is obliviously NOT SF...I used to be a bike messenger and NEVER stopped for red lights or stop signs. I probably saw 10-20 bikers just today blow through red lights and stop signs, and those are probably the same dumb asses that go to critical mess. SMH at the new school bikers in SF. Grow a pair and stop complaining.

I didn't know I was complaining? I could have sworn that was you, but oh well. Reality works in strange ways I guess. You remember that addage from school about just because everyone else is doing it? So is it ok for a motorist to blow red lights?

And by admitting running red lights are you saying it's ok because you do it? And since you used to do it you must be one of those dumbasses who attend critical mass.

Guess I should grow a pair and stop being my own person and doing the right thing.

You know I think you have me figured out all wrong. What I am saying is that as long as the majority of bikes run red lights/stop signs(and break other traffic laws)...AND as long as the majority of cars on the road also break traffic laws and make mistakes that result in accidents with a bikers...we will always have problems. Classic case of us vs. them that never results in any progress that will actually benefits both bikers AND cars(much like modern politics in the US).

That I can totally agree with you on. It is a us vs them problem. Here in Florida we're working on ad campaigns to create a stronger bond between cyclist and motorist. Aka, letting drivers know we're no different than them when we're on a bike. But you're totally right, as long as we both continue to make mistakes they will ultimately end up with someone dead.

Hmm, lots of car drivers must be retarded then.

Speed limit: aka, the maximum speed one can travel safely. Technically speaking (in my state at least) you can still get a ticket for doing the limit if it's unsafe.

And just fyi, my average speed is between 15-20 mph. On flat to slight uphills. Downhills I top out around 40+ mph. Yes, that's on a bicycle. Something you pedal.

And yes, cars are. That does make logical sense. It's also the law. Bikes are legally treated just the same as a motor vehicle. Welcome to the real world.
