In regards to the comment posted by smcamden above i may be able to comment. Today my 3 year old domestic was diagnosed with feline asthma from my vet who I trust very well. 3 weeks ago my kitty started to have for lack of a better description "gag reflex attacks" I thought this was somewhat normal as it looked like she was trying to cough up a hairball. This happened about 3 or 4 times a day but nothing ever came up. She has also lost 3 lbs since her last visit to the vet 1 year ago.
Thank you for the post. My male maine coon, Silverado, has lost a lot of weight and has labored breathing. It seems worse on the exhale. He has been tested for everything and nothing has been figured out yet. A short time ago I heard wheezing with his exhale and looked that up, finding asthma. He never coughs. Have you seen coughing with your cat? Any weight loss?
This is usually what Zack does when he's having asthma. He's always been a lean cat and has had asthma most of his life, so I wouldn't say he lost weight. Once other causes were ruled out such as feline heartworm or other parasites, and after a bronchio-alveolar lavage, he was diagnosed.

@Jrcouzen that amount of weight loss is concerning. Did they rule out other possible causes, such as fungal infection?
