What's so special about this performance is that there are no background vocals anywhere. Dionne is carrying the melody through the chorus all by her lonesome working her way through 2 or 3 registers with stunning ease and flexibility. Few girl singers, then or now, could do this with such effortless finesse.

@bravespear7 She sure did SANG!! Wow.. Aretha, boss lady she may be and one of my favorites, can't hold a candle to Dionne in some respects.. The changes in the registers, and the softer tones.. for example. :) Love it!!

So much class. There's really so much finesse and depth to this rendition. She reels you in slowly with understatement that speaks to her supreme confidence. Then she builds the narrative into a rollercoaster of fluttering valleys and peaks. Like someone else said with "no backup singers". Watch other performers try their hand at this song and you'll see how they pale in comparison.
