Rendition performed by Michael Peter Smith at the Brotherly Love Benefit Concert held at The Prairie Center For The Arts in Schaumburg Illinois, August, 1997 for Eric Kinkel's sister Linda Kinkel who suffered from MS
If this is the man who wrote this song I'd like to take this moment out of my time on earth to thank him because it is a vital song and when he is no longer with us he will not have died in vain. By the way, he will still be with us through song. I wish more people on earth would get in touch with the sensitivity expressed in this song. I guarantee that if we did there would be no more war.
Yep. I love Liam Clancy's music, ballads especially.... I also love Keith and Celtic Thunder. It is good that there is still something decent in the world....Blessin's to ya'. Kathleen
Hey katsongs...thanks for the comments. :) I appreciate your input. You are so right when you say that people only look for something to mock. I grew up on a lot of traditional Irish music, and The Dutchman is among my favorites. To date, Keith's is the best version I have heard, with Liam Clancy's being a very close second.
Hey LPI, loved your comment....the following 3 comments are actually one reply to you. Listen to what you love darlin'...I am sure it is apparent that the naysayers sort of get on my last 1/2 nerve. :-) Grannys will have their say.... Blessin's and have a great music-filled life. Grannyk/katsongs
Folk who only look for something to mock, aren't usually ACTUALLY listening. As for the great "They" who put out their neg spin to cheat the rest of into agreeing with them, don't let them rule you. CT has not claimed to be traditional only. They simply claim to be Celtic....their music is a reflection of both old and new Celtic music, with the occasional hat's off to other forms of music.
Young Keith is a very talented and interesting artist starting out, who has a wonderful voice and does a great job on this song....it is what it is, his take in his style, and based on that we make up our own minds. And no, I'm not his Mama or the leader of his fan club. I am not talking about Keith Harkin the artist, as much as I am having a say about the labeling of many artists that goes on some people's planets.
I'm thinking of a song about a man that left his old clothes on the line ~ I've always been
half me, and half someone I'm leaving behind ~ I think it was Patterson Sommer .

I sang this song to my wife in the middle of our wedding vows. That was 29 years ago. I'm not Dutch but she's still my Margaret.

Keith Harkin sings those lyrics with such passion and clarity yet we never forget the rhytym and beautiful melody of the music.
