Basil the Guinea Pig Eating

RIP Basil - 3/2/09

I got Basil out of his cage like I did every night, and he wasn't acting right and would only take a few bites of his veggies instead of devouring them like usual. I sat down on my bed and picked him up and held him, and he died in my arms. I didn't get over losing him for over a month, but I know I couldn't have asked for anything more with him. I had him over 2 years, and he was about 7 1/2 years old. He wasn't suffering at all, he just took one last bite of carrot, and a few minutes later he was gone. I almost think he waited for me to get home. I'm glad I got to be there with him, and although he had shown absolutely no signs of any kind of problem, I had a feeling for a few days before he died that something wasn't right. His 'sister' Winnie now occupies his cage as it was much bigger than hers. I love all my other guinea pigs, but I don't think I will ever find another guinea pig as sweet or friendly as him. He really was the perfect guinea pig.

I'd recommend doing a google search to read as much about them as you can before you actually get one, they are fantastic animals but they have specific needs and you really have to know all about them to take care of them properly, like knowing their vitamin needs, housing needs, medical requirements.. I'm sure I could explain it all but it would take forever, so I think you'd be better off just reading all those pages that are already out there that are dedicated to guinea pig care! Good luck!

Basil would grab them too, but he loves to sit on a piece of fleece and eat his salad every day! It makes it easier to clean his cage every day at least!

He's beautiful! He looks alot like mine. :) He is very, very healthy and I can tell. He's practiclly glowing! Guinea7Pig, could you add me? My poor, poor first guinea pig. She passed a couple months ago, but I'm going through. I believe she had diahareahha. (Sorry, my spelling isn't that good.) Just wanted to tell. :)
