Every time a harrier launches there is high alert as every launch is critical. Sea harriers can also take off vertically.

  • Went to see one of these in a museum! There amazing!

  • @ilovepista That should read 'USMC' of course sorry!

  • @ilovepista Well thats not strictly true as the UAMC has just the complete UK fleet of Harriers for both operational duties and spare parts purposes. So the AV-8D Harriers will be flying for many years to come. The F35 will be a much better aircraft as the Harrier is 30 years old but the F35 would never have been built had the Harrier not proved the viability of VTOL / STOL ground attack and fighter operations. Oh and I hear the F35 has a British Rolls Royce propulsion system!

  • thats why america is now going to use the new F-35's >:D

  • @mrmanunitedforever Mig-29K and Hal Tejas will replace those Harriers in Indian Navy.

  • @ilovepista no america doesn't use the harrier much because it is slow, not as maneuverable as nowadays jets, and also old. The f-35 lightning II is a much more modern and capable aircraft with VTOL capabilities just like the harrier except it is better in every way. Plus it takes a lot more skill to fly a f-35 than it does a harrier.

  • US has 10 supercarriers with a compliment of arnd 80-100 aircrafts in each and many other light aircraft carriers and air defense ships. there are 9 other countries with naval air wing and even their combined strength being lesser than US alone. But its more of a case of protecting strategic interests more than muscle flexing on US's part . A country like india does need atleast 2 Carrier based task forces to protect their maritime interests in both the seaboards.

  • @307angel You're basically the same thing...

  • @arcades687 The US has 11 carriers in service at the moment! Yeah I know what you mean, it does seem like overkill but I think it's just a case of these countries flexing their muscles but I do think money could be better spent in other areas

  • @arcades687 Yes they do but why would they need more than one enemy for them to constitute having aircraft carriers? Many countries with no specific enemies have aircraft carriers.
