I think both sides are right in a way. Yes "inside of a wheel" is descriptive but it is not AS descriptive as the "paint on a canvas" clue. The former is more of a noun whereas the latter is a verb action. I would assume today you would have to say "a wheel's inside"?

That's right. The key is to avoid a prepositional phrase.
