No wonder Neal Schon wanted him. Journey didn't need someone who sounded exactly like Steve Perry. They already had applicants who could do that, but they still weren't quite happy with them. They wanted someone to perform the songs they had written but not yet produced.

Arnel's skill at covering many different bands is what impressed Schon. They were looking to the future, not the past.

Props to this amazing singer from the Phillippines!! To ALL naysayers out there, I for one have been a Journey fan since '79 and believe that he is the most qualified person to hold the lead singer position. All others have come & gone since Perry, but none are as humble as Arnel. And to add to his credentials, he is bilingual! I wonder if all the naysayers can even sing in another 2nd language as good as Arnel. So please stop the hate and insults, and just enjoy the music!

Listen, Arnel is truly a wonderful singer but Steve Perry sits his ass right behind Freddie Mercury at the top of the list of greatest singers in rock history. Oh, good version of a song I will NEVER get tired of hearing. Two chords in and I'm INSTANLY transported 20 years back in time every time I hear it. Robin Zander would be proud.

This is why I hate when haters define him a Steve Perry copy cause I know he can do much more than what he does with the Journey band, SP might the best for that band, but Arnel can do much more of a Steve Perry can. No disrespect to SP, he's the voice and he's just so unique . But I don't think he is as veersatile as Arnel is.
