This video showcases some of the music recorded as part of a Royal Geographical Society Expedition to the Himalayas in 2005. See www.tibetmusic.org. Over several months our team recorded the folk music repertoire of a number of remote Tibetan communities. Here I present a sample of the recordings, accompanied by footage of Tsedo, one of the nomadic villagers. The opening song "Where the bamboo grows" is sung solo by one of the village elders. A group of twenty-three women sing the next track, and the final song is accompanied by a Dramyen, the native 6-string lute instrument.

  • Excellent. Where in Tibet is this?

  • Hi there,

Thanks for your comment. The footage was all taken in the Porong region, the nearest large settlemnt being Tingri. Look out for a website about the expedition in the next few months. Thanks, Tomas
