Music of China: Chinese classical pipa master piece composed by Liu Tianhua （刘天华 1895-1932）for pipa （琵琶）solo, interpreted by the renowned Chinese pipa virtuoso Liu Fang （刘芳）at the TFF Rudolstadt festival in 2006, taken from the festival DVD (2007) with permission to use for demo purposes. The title of this piece is "On the theme of an air to dance" 歌舞引) (Liu Tianhua, 1895-1932). Though died very young, Liu Tianhua is one of the greatest composers in Chinese history. He composed three pieces for pipa and several other famous pieces for erhu (二胡), all are recognized as master pieces of classical repertoire. In particular, his contribution to the development of erhu is immense. In fact, it was due to him and Abing that the Erhu (which used to be an instrument mainly used for folk ensembles, accompaning singers or local operas) has become a solo instrument. The current piece for pipa solo was inspired after attending a concert of classical Indian dance.

Liu Tianhua compte parmi les compositeurs les plus appréciés et célèbres de l'histoire de la musique chinoise. Il est notamment l'auteur de trois pièces pour pipa et de quelques autres, destinées à d'autres instruments, qui toutes sont considérées comme des chef-d'œuvre du répertoire classique. Cet air a été composé à l'issue d'un concert de danse indienne dont les rythmes et la musique ont directement inspiré le compositeur.
