James Foster was director of the Honolulu Academy of Arts and oversaw a sort of golden age of acquisition. In his prescient pursuit of contemporary works, Foster worked closely with Academy trustee Duane Preble, author of the seminal art history textbook Artforms. Weisman came to give the modern masterpiece to the Academy in 1971.
