Looks like a magnetic (reed switch) like they use for security on doors and windows being used to trigger something on the crank angle.
I see it's triggering the irrigation valve.

stevenc08 i saw a V8 used as a compressor yrs ago. 4 cyclinders were powering the engine and the other 4 were pumping air into a tank. don't ask me how it did it. 2 months ago

You may not know, but many, especially farmers, have been using windmills to compress air. Hydropower can also be used to compress air.This stored air can run pumps, etc.
