It's probably cheaper to build their own...as for the origins of the designs, a lot of these weapons are foreign in design but have either been licensed for local production or have been modified and then produced (again this is cheaper since you don't have to import anything) so technically they are no longer foreign. Plus the Leopard isn't perfect and in terms of combat the M1 Abrams (despite its flaws) has seen more real action - if anything, it would be wiser to improve upon that design.

@KiranaForever According to russian statements NK still operates some T-34. Read articles about north korean military, it's catastrophic lay and form your own view on it. That nation is so isolated and underdeveloped that even the Swiss Guard could conquer the country all alone. The only reason why nobody bombed NK OUT OF the stone age is that South Korea fears a reunification and the ramifications for the national finances and the economy. It would be much "worse" than the german reunification.

if you actually consider this seriously, we face two problems.

A. Korean tank and Japanese tanks are created for different purpose.

B. Comparing prototype and already 'refined' product is not an accurate comparison.

And besides, If you actually look at closely, defensive capability of type 90 is only concentrated on front armor, and nowadays, even K1A1 has better armor capability than type 90. Mobility? Are you even aware that Type 90 and TK-X use more fuel than M1 Abrahms?

For FCS and mobility, K2 is greater than Type 90. For defense capitacy, is unknown.
