no actually , its real name is the line cutter , not the crossbow , just because it resembles one does not mean its called that , hell its even in the menu.

if there's one thing I notice is that you'll know they're really dead if you see an item fall from enemies, but it's hard to tell if they're dead if you don't see an item fall from them.

Even by the end of the game their exact nature isn't explicitly known or revealed. Most consider them aliens, but the Unitologists (not to mention the seemingly benevolent contact made by "those departed") would suggest it's actually much deeper, some sort of pre-planned cosmic evolutionary brick wall, designed just for humanity.
