Jazz is America's classical music, and classical music is America's jazz. When Al Jarreau and company created jazz (America's classical music) in the early 1970's, people were confused about what exactly was going on. Well, looks who's laughing now........Jazz is......Jazz is laughing now.

I play bass, and was privileged enough to be a part of an "educational" jazz in schools program. I know that jazz was invented before the 1970's because, on one occasion, the singer informed the children in the audience that, "Jazz was invented in the 1850's." I love the concept of "inventing" a genre. And pre-civil war at that! So, just to remind you, Al Jarreau is 160 years old at least.
