Mi chiamano Mimi from La Boheme. Guest soprano Barbara Padilla appears with the Heartland Festival Orchestra and Artistic Director David Commanday.

Mi chiamano Mimi -- They call me Mimi

Sì. Mi chiamano Mimì,
ma il mio nome è Lucia.
La storia mia è breve.
A tela o a seta
ricamo in casa e fuori...
Son tranquilla e lieta
ed è mio svago
far gigli e rose.
Mi piaccion quelle cose
che han sì dolce malìa,
che parlano d'amor, di primavere,
di sogni e di chimere,
quelle cose che han nome poesia...
Lei m'intende?

Mi chiamano Mimì,
il perché non so.
Sola, mi fo
il pranzo da me stessa.
Non vado sempre a messa,
ma prego assai il Signore.
Vivo sola, soletta
là in una bianca cameretta:
guardo sui tetti e in cielo;
d'ora a importunare.

English Translation

Yes, they call me Mimi,
But my name is Lucy
My history is brief
With cloth or silk
I embroider at home or outside...
I am peaceful and happy
And it is my pastime
To make lilies and roses
I like those things
That have such sweet smell,
That speak of love, of spring,
That speak of dreams and of chimeras -
Those things that have poetic names
Do you understand me?

They call me Mimi,
but why I don't know.
Alone, I make
Lunch for myself the same.
I do not always go to mass,
But I pray a lot to the Lord.
I live alone, alone.
There in a little white room
I look upon the roofs up to heaven.
By when the thaw comes
The first sun is mine
The first kiss of April is mine!
Rose buds in a vase
Leaf and leaf I watch it!
That gentle perfume of a flower!
But the flowers that I make
Ah me! they don't have odor!
More about me I know not how to tell
I am a neighbor who came unexpectedly
to bother you.

  • I could watch Ms. Padilla for hours - what a beautiful, beautiful woman. And the voice? You've heard of the peaceful white light from Heaven - her voice is the peaceful white sound of Heaven.

  • Bárbara sings well and I do understand her italian!!!!

Canta muy bien y yo si le entiendo a su italiano.

  • FERMATELA!!!

  • FERMATELA!!!

  • Terrible dress, terrible sunburn marks on her chest, awfull hair, but quite nice upper registr.

  • @FraLaFra90 IT'S YOUR PROBLEM

  • I can't understand what she's singing....even if I'm italian!

  • This woman is the Maria Callas of the 21st century!! BBC Music Magazine should give her that distinction, she absolutely deserves it!! I saw and heard her in person, it was absolutely GLORIOUS.

  • Awesome truly beautiful rendition.

  • brava Diva
