Hull-Oakes is one of the last steam-powered saw mills in existence and has been in operation since 1938.

The mill generates lumber loads on railroad centerbeam cars as well as wood chip loads. Located at the end of the six mile Bailey Branch, switching operations provide an interesting logistical challenge. In 2007, rail service was suspended due to deteriorating conditions of the rails. This video documents the end of that era.

  • @NARSConductor Hull Oaks is still in operation as of 11/18/11. I used to haul Bark out of there. Casey Hull, Nice people. Makes me wonder why they didn't maintain the rail's..

  • Dude the money wasnt there to invest in repairs. For example hauling the wood chips payed $100.14 for a trip that was 615 miles. The lumber wasnt much better. That cheap hull oaks didnt want to invest in repairs either. A year later they were begging us to come back. Even offering to replace all the tracks and pay raises to G&W. To late. G&W told them to go to hell. I worked at G&W for 20 years up until 2010. I am looking at the pay rates for the mill and laughing. terrible rates.

  • G&W should've repaired the track and hired another crew man

  • why didn't genesee and wyoming do anything about the tracks, i thought at least a company of that size can fix a couple miles of track? also if someone was to buy the land would it be possible to bring it back to operation or is the mill long gone?
