For many schools, the influx of English language learners occurred very quickly, leaving little time to train teachers and leaders on how to manage this acute demographic shift. Because of a lack of training, many educators are left frustrated and overwhelmed trying to meet the needs of their ELL students.

While teaching English language learners certainly presents a challenge, it is one that can be overcome with research-based practices that benefit every student.

I appreciate this video example of how to integrate science and teaching the ELL student population. This was an excellent example of using multiple types of comprehensible input, such as reducing the affective filter, using hand gestures to increase understanding, and slower rate of speech. The students were able to easily connect their prior knowledge of the story to the new science content. The students were participating and clearly engaged in the activity.
