The famous 1925 trial of John Scopes in Dayton Tennessee became known as the "Monkey Trial". John Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution. This breached the Tennessee anti-evolution law known as the Butler Act. The trial itself received national attention as it was not only one of the first ever court cases which was broadcast live on radio but pitted famous lawyer, Clarence Darrow against past presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan.

  • @thisissierra

You never lived through the OJ trial in the 90's did you?

  • @Mac3622 Many forget that to be a democrat or a republican before WW2 could have meant anything. The south was heavily democratic for a hundred years, and the north was republican. Speaking as a Canadian who is currently studying the subject I find it interesting to see the great varriation in the political spectrum on can find in both parties. Or at least used too...

  • This story is incredible, thank you for the upload!

  • Could someone tell me where I may find the footage of H L Mencken at 4:05 please? I wasn't aware that Mencken was ever captured on film. The only recording I can find of him on YouTube is a radio interview. If someone can direct me to the video footage I'd really appreciate it. No matter how many years transpire till you stumble upon this request, if you know where I can find the film please drop me a message. Thanks.

    A Mencken Fan.

  • soda!!!!!!!!!

  • Patrick Henry said "Give me liberty or give me death"

Just remember one little historical fact: Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most progressive presidents that the US ever had and he was Republican.

(For the record, I'm a Canadian who likes watching the "Elephant")

  • i don't mean that in a bad way: but this is typically American - the left and the right, science and relgion bash at each other - and whats behind all this?? The will to make a buck - in a way that's like Fox News and Msnbc - they are glad to have each other to moan about

  • Yeah, their positions and role in thhe american body politic changed a lot during the civil rights movement and the social upheavals of the later 20th century

  • Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    hahahahahahaha

  • And by Republicans today, do you mean foxnewsicans?

More like Lincoln? I wonder if that would be better than anything we have today.

I forgot who said "Give me liberty or give me death"
