This is a project that has been in my mind for years. Activate solenoids sequentially and let them pop balloons. Initially we wanted to do the project with sixteen slots that carried multiple balloons via a cartridge system that loaded a new balloon as soon as the previous one was popped.
For school we decided to do this project but in a much more simple form.
We rigged four solenoids up to a midi controlled switching device wich we controlled with max/msp. The max/msp patch provided the midi signals as well as the processing of the sound. The microphone you see gets switched on for 50 ms as each balloon pops. That sound then gets routed through a karplus-strong algorithm, thus creating a stringy like effect. I hope you enjoy it!
