Dom Flemons tells it like it was -- and too often still is -- in a solo performance of Bye-Bye Policeman. Most often, he performs this song as a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops -- whose mission is to make good music while bringing the banjo, an African instrument, back to the people who originally played it. They appeared in the film The Great Debaters (the Oprah Winfrey production starring Denzel Washington). Their name honors The Tennessee Chocolate Drops, a Black string band that toured the world in the '20s and '30s -- whose leader, Louie Bluie, could sing all their songs in 16 languages.
Like their forebears, the Carolina Chocolate Drops tour extensively throughout the world. They are on the Musicmaker Foundation record label, which provides financial and other assistance to older blues and traditional music performers.
