The level whose appearance changes the most in standard graphics is this, the last level of Future (and thus of Repton 3 as a whole). In the Future graphics, blank space is filled with a kind of space dust, while skulls and fungus are entirely black, representing the vacuum of space. This level, one large skull maze with only a few wall sections, thus becomes the most striking and atmospheric level of the game, and if you haven't completed it yet, I implore you to do so in themed graphics *first*.

The Future scenario has a blue, white and green colour scheme that appears nowhere else in the official levels (whereas OAP's red, white and green was also used in Repton 4). I think it's a shame, because this is one of the better colour schemes, having a slightly different mood from the "normal" blue levels and so adding a bit more variety. In fact, I think all the colour schemes with white instead of yellow are good ones, and more people should consider them as options when designing levels.

The spirit behaviour difference I explained in my video of Now Level 7 plays an unexpected role in this level. The first spirit starts off moving to the right on the BBC version, to the left on the PC remake (and also on the BBC version if this level is played in Repton 3). This means that Repton has less time to move out of its way; but it also means the first cage is opened sooner, which has a knock-on effect altering the timing of the rest of the solution. Note, for one thing, that I run to get the diamonds and enter the first transporter without stopping; this would not be possible on the PC version. Nor is it possible to transport to the bottom-right area and move immediately, dodging the spirit while it's still to your left; you would have to wait for it to go past you. If these differences are taken full advantage of (and note that I speed things up by opening the back cage in the bottom-right first) it is even possible to reach the top part of the level and open the first cage there ahead of the spirits, not that this actually makes much difference to the solution or to the time it takes.

This is, as I said, the last level of the Repton 3 series and my 150th video, and thus an appropriate place to say goodbye, at least for now. I was never going to video every level of Repton 3 (though I highly recommend testpilotmonkey's videos if you want to see the levels I haven't covered). I have now recorded all the levels I find most interesting or had particular things to say about; but I am still happy to take requests if anyone wants a video of a particular level. Otherwise, watch this space, because my next video project will be Repton: The Lost Realms -- coming soon!

The music for this video is "Stickerbrush Symphony" from Donkey Kong Country 2 (and if you've ever played that game, you'll know why it seemed an appropriate choice for this level!)

  • I did guess you would do a Future level, but it was a surprise that you chose Level 8, as you were thinking of doing Level 5
