This music is a work of genius. The amalgam of styles is fascinating, of course, but even throughout the work you can hear Schnittke's signature pessimism and voice of utter terror pierce through the insanity. It is as if one were to walk through a museum damaged by an earthquake, with the many artefacts of the many centuries displayed by the tremors and mixed into a potpourri, all covered by the decaying ruins of the museum's structure...

Schnittke's 'sinister' side is a bit cheesy, with an unfair use of dissonance, like he consciously wants to make dissonance too blatantly to enhance the effect some tonal simplicities. At times he doesnt use it in such way, and intends the madness to be central of his work. It is then when I believe him to be a master of expression, balancing phrases with finesse comparable to Mendelssohn's and Berlioz'.

Schnittke was a true revoutionary... incorporating so many different musical styles. Every piece of his you listen to will be full of surprises. I would like someone to upload his Symphony No. 0... a tonal masterpiece with four conventional movements, ending with a dissonant chord! ...a harbinger of things to come!
