This instrument is pointless, just look up Özcan Ulucan-Birsen on youtube playing it on a real viola.

It wasn't written for the cello but a rare bowed guitar called "Arpeggione" as the name of this work implies. It's usually taken up cellists but sometimes by violists or guitarists. Most cellists avoid hitting the E6 note such as was the case when Senler did the scale passage an octave lower than in the original score at 7:13.

Because this piece is incredibly difficult on cello (it's one of the hardest sonatas written for cello)

I like his interpretation of this piece but I think Tanya Remenikova's is better :]
