Very nice!! I love all the Ted Smith designs, but this one is special. Franklin and Hoover--truly in a class by themselves. Having the feel of the plane like it's a part of you, it's a gift few have enjoyed. Sadly, I never had the chance to meet Jimmy, but a friend of mine and I got to meet Bob on a Sunday afternoon at Reno one year (before the FAA fiasco), and he was every part the true gentleman...we'll never forget!

What is the name of the first song? I'd like to know!

As far as a high altitude pressurized piston twin, nothing beats the 700. They are very cheap too for what they are. In my opinion, fewer people would buy Dukes if they knew about the Aerostar.

@HDaviator No doubt. My tongue in cheek comment not withstanding, the Aerostar 700 is my dream plane. Look at its single engine climb with flaps, gear down, and with one engine windmilling is still over 400 FPM! That's got to take the edge off VMC training. :)

Or... you like to have the safety of that second engine. An Aerostar 600A costs less than half the price of a new cirrus and gives you the same speed if not more. The maintenance is a bit more but not as much as you might think. The fuel is the biggest thing on a twin but when flying over water, you wan't to see that second engine, no doubt about it. If you fly over land most of the time then its not a necessity.

Now thats having a feel for your aircraft!

If God had intended man to fly twins he would have made us with trust-funds and lots of AMUs :P

Reminds me of Dar Robinson who flew an Aerostar as Dar the Star. I saw the act once at Reno Air Races in the mid-late eighties, then Dar died (he was a hollywood stunt man). This actually looks like his plane as it was all black. The commentary sounds familiar too. Are you sure this is Jim Franklin?
Bob Hoover performed in the Shrike at this same airshow with Jimmy Franklin. Hoover's style was that of a heavy glider pilot with auxiliary engines occasionally. Both performances got you up on your feet!

This was Jim Franklin's routine all the way through. A quick search on the web doesn't show up any piloting references for Dar Robinson.

Dueling Wacos - Jim Franklin & Elliot Cross is another early MGB1977Red video showing a PAIR of big Wacos chasing each other around the sky, and down on the deck!

Jim Franklin redefined the meaning of flying low back in the early '80s. This black executive twin Piper Aerostar was named "Starship Pride" and Jim wore an all black costume as "ZAR". Smooth, low and fast, this was a very popular routine. This full-throttle performance contrasted nicely with Bob Hoover's engine-off display at the same airshow.
