"THOU ART PETER and upon this rock I will build my church."
1506 2006: 500 years of the New St.Peters Cathedral in Rome.
April 18th, 1506 saw the beginning of the end for the 1200-year-old St. Peters Basilica on the Vatican Hill in Rome. For on this day, under the supervision of chief architect Donato Bramante, the foundation stone was laid for a new St. Peter's Cathedral.
In a sequence of bitter power struggles, shattering defeats and glorious triumphs Bramante, Sangallo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini created this world-famous center of the Roman Catholic Church. The Reformation and the Counter-Reformation might well have taken quite a different course without this building. Like a huge precious shell the dome envelops the humble tomb, buried within its depths, is the Apostle Peter, appointed by Jesus to bear responsibility for the Christian faith.

@ByouDanseiKamiEnSai ,
You have a point,I guess.Yet they DO have obscene wealth,& still 2 thirds of it's congregants live in such poverty.

@popazz1 I just remembered something. You know how in church they ask for donations? Those donations go to the Vatican's bank or something. That money is then donated to charities. The money that the Vatican uses for itself comes from the entrance tickets you buy to enter the Vatican, the museums, gift shops, and police tickets <- ( maybe).

@ByouDanseiKamiEnSai ,
Well,if it meant that the nation's citizens didn't go hungry,& had warmth & a roof over their heads,then too right I'd sell off 'priceless artwork'.No point having 'nice' things to look at if everyone's starving & is without shelter!

@popazz1 You cant just sell priceless artwork. Would you like to sell pieces of history and culture that have been in your nation for 2000 years for quick monotary gain? I wouldn't.

Not having enough money has never bothered Vatican before! Maybe they ought to sell off all it's art & give the proceeds to it's starving & vulnerable followers! Or perhaps that's too close to charity for the pope & his henchmen!

@semnekar:I agree.We should also demand to see, as a free & collectible world that comes together,to see the biggest mystery the Vatican holds;for the Holy See to release the one bit of information that has been withheld despite universal calls for it's release;for the RC Leader of the entire World, the Universe,under God, indivisible,wih liberty and justice for all...We are all pining for this one article to be shown the light of day...and that is, please, release....the Pope's DVD collection.

Small correction -- on the description you refer to St. Peter's as a cathedral. It is not. It is a basilica. The cathedral of Rome is St. John Lateran. As bishop of Rome, the pope's church (as bishop of Rome) is St. John Lateran. St. Peter's Basilica is the main church of Vatican City and of the pope. But it is not a cathedral.
