DOHA — Iraq's German coach Wolfgang Sidka will face compatriot Holger Osieck in the Asian Cup quarter-finals after the reigning champions dispensed a toothless North Korea to set up a date with Australia.
Midfielder Kerrar Jasim, one of three changes made by Sidka after the 2007 champions laboured to a 1-0 defeat of United Arab Emirates in their previous game, secured Iraq's progress to the last eight at the North's expense.
Jasim scored on 22 minutes what turned out to be the winner Wednesday evening after striker Mustafa Kareem -- another of Sidka's changes -- let loose from distance, goalkeeper Ri Myong-Guk palming the ball straight into Jasim's path.
The goal put Iraq through and sent the unambitious Koreans out, with the holders now facing Australia on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.
Sidka, a former Werder Bremen player, smiled at the prospect of two Germans in the last eight of Asia's premier competition.
"I know him very well, we know each other well. It's two German coaches against each other, though both of us would prefer to play against each other later in the tournament," he said.
He refused to be drawn on Australia's strengths or weaknesses: "I prefer to talk about my team," he said.
But the Socceroos will likely have revenge on their minds.
Iraq sprang a major shock in seeing off the Australians 3-1 in the group stages four years ago, setting the war-weary nation on the way to becoming eventual champions and making headlines worldwide.
They have not yet hit the heights of last time round and Sidka has faced criticism from Iraqi media for his team selection. They lost 2-1 to Iran in their opener in Doha to get their title defence off to a poor start.
And they needed an injury-time own goal to squeeze past UAE, leaving them requiring just a point to advance past the group stage at the expense of North Korea.
A goal down at half time, the anticipated onslaught by a Korean side desperate for victory never materialised.
"If they were allowed to attack, sure they would have been able to get back into it but we imposed ourselves on the match," said Sidka.
"We kept the ball, especially in the first half, we had a lot of ball possession so we didn't allow them to create opportunities. It was always our plan that we would have more ball possession and not let them play.
"The most important thing is that we are now playing Australia in the quarter-final. I think we deserve this victory, we played very well, especially in the first half."
He said the players would enjoy the evening before setting their sights on the Socceroos, who topped their group with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bahrain.
"I trust my team and sure, we are here to keep going," Sidka said.
"I prepared my team for this (Korea) match, my players are now tired and it's necessary that we recover very well because we have one day less to prepare than Australia.
"I have watched them before, physically they are very strong and they have some professional players and very experienced players in their team.
