Nice video, but when I do it I skip the measuring. I just move the bridge around and check the note played open and at the 12th fret. I mean you have a rough idea of where the bridge should be anyways, so if you get it close and then check the note played open and at the 12th fret you know which direction you have to move the bridge to get it in proper intonation.

@t1mel1ne: open-G tuning is the most common: gDGBD (where the little g is the high 5th string).
a very common variation is called Sawmill or sometimes "Mountain Minor" tuning. that's where you flick the B up one half-step to a C, so that you have gDGCD. it gives a lovely modal sound that's perfect for old mountain ballads.

hey, i've read a lot about banjo tuning and can't seem to find anything that just gives me a bog standard tuning lke a guitar. I've got a 5 string banjo and just want to play it for fun as my main instrument is guitar, but whats a standard tuning for a 5 string?

Thank you sir. Until I came across this video, my bridge had been on the wrong position (wayyyyyy off!!!). I just repositioned and it sounds a LOT better! God bless you, sir! Gonna watch your other videos now and learn a lot more!
