I'll say; having the woodcutter send the wolf on his way with a warning was a lot less cruel than stuffing him with rocks and condemning him to a slow and painful death. Which of course is often the case in the most commonly known version of the story. But they seem to let the wolf off easy in this one. And that was more forgiving.
