The animation show the model results of the flooding in the Fukushima II power plant area (Fukushima prefecture) overlaid on Google Earth, to show the propagation of the tsunami wave on land in different areas.
Apart from the wave height the flooding extent depends strongly on the topography. Indeed a flat terrain - such as the plain around Sendai bay (which was most affected by the tsunami) - is more prone to flooding than hilly terrains - such as Miyagi and Fukushima coasts.
The animations show that the inundation from the tsunami wave was sudden around Sendai bay: the water propagated up to 4 km in land in only 30 min.
