At least Ground Zero is being rebuilt.

Factory work is dehumanizing and mind-numbing. Read Ben Hamper's book Rivethead about life in a Flint GM factory. The best outcome would have been to retrain and guarantee jobs in humane and interesting careers for these workers. Sorry about all the nice factory buildings that were demolished, but something far more precious was destroyed over the last 30 years -- belief that the wealthy in this country actually care about the middle class, like they do in, say, Japan. Divided we fall.

roger smith and his brilliant plan to close fully functioning plants that were making huge profits was also a big factor in flints downfall

This has already been said, but I want to add my voice to the count--capitalism was not the main villain in Flint's downfall; it was unreasonable unionization.

People are blaming capitalism for what happened to Detroit? lmao

@brucebirch79 LOL spoken like someone who is jealous because they couldn't get one of those GM jobs. You have been reading to much conservative, right wing propoganda. The union is NOT blameless but it di much more good for people than it ever did harm.

Saturday, June 4th, 2011. Flint, Michigan.

And we'll have plenty of shopping centers, condos, and walking trails for the unemployed to visit in it's place.

Unions and gov't mandates, destroyed the American industrial base.

The Twin Towers were destroyed by anti-American Islamic jihadist terrorists. Flint was destroyed by Crony-Capitalists who sought to destroy the capitalistic competitiveness that made America great in the first place. Capitalism is not to blame. Big government encouraging the monopolistic practices of those who support them by regulating the competition out of business is responsible for this. If you don't think this is true, just keep an eye on GE.
I live in Michigan - the Unions did this and no one else.

Flint wasn't destroyed by GM, it was destroyed by the UAW. Unrealistic and unsustainable benefits along with far too much protection for incompetent, drunk, or absentee workers was what destroyed Flint. How was GM supposed to compete with a workforce marred by a lot of workers clocking in, sneaking out to the bar, sneaking back in drunk and working for about 25% of their shifts? Plus not being able to fire those same workers because of "trouble with the union".
