I may be wrong but...the dog represents freedom and having a say in thing in which people listen; the man was depressed, he brought about his own death. In turn he became "free"
(in reality) dogs are literally mans best friend, they sniff out tumors on owners in some cases and point it out by scratching, licking and biting, which i guess could relate to the dog sacrificing itself

Well... If everybody is already guessing about the meaning of this, i shall give it a try myself.
The "Thank you" at the end is absolutly correct. as the dog said "if you would have a tumor, youd have a true friend". that doesnt mean, the tumor is the friend. but as he is deadly ill he truely got a friend: the dog. in this miserable situation the dog was there - and the situation was because of the tumor. so the dog gave advice so he could proof, that hes a real friend - and give his live?
