The Anderson Powerpole has been adopted by the amateur radio community as their standard 12-volt DC power connector for everything from radios to accessories. Powerpoles provide a more reliable electrical connection, both mechanically and electrically, and are easier to adapt to a wider range of wire gauges. Powerpole connectors are physically and electrically "unisex", thus avoiding the need to worry about which end is the plug and which the socket, or which end has the correct polarity.

For use in amateur radio, the community has adopted a standard polarity for assembling the connectors using one red and one black housing. A useful mnemonic for remembering the arrangement for the positive connector "Red Right—Tongue Top".

Many sizes of the Powerpoles are available, however the size most commonly used is the 15/30/45 ampere variety. These sizes all use the same plastic housing in multiple colors, differing only in the metal contact inserted into the housing. The metal contact is selected based on the amperage and wire size.

  • Fine work, David. Just a note: Many hams have ditched the roll pins in favor of a dab of superglue on the dovetails just before putting them together. The pins sometimes wiggle free and get in the way of the cap connectors, as you mentioned. Of course, it's permanent, but there's not much of a reason to take them apart. Plus, the roll pins are easy to lose.

  • @TeakPhillips - thank you sir!

I was thinking of you when I posted my most recent channel page background image . . . 73!

  • Hey Doc, where did you get those wire strippers?

  • @mts0628 - I got the wire strippers many years ago. I have seen the same type at Home Depot and Lowes.

  • uggg... I hate having to work with those connectors... I had to use some of them for a combat robot I made but my favorite connectors are deans. You should take a look. No wire crimping and there is less resistance than the same length piece of 12 gauge wire. anyway deans connectors may be worth a look!

  • thanks for the tips little ocd lol but very good work

  • @outatime1955 The 45, 30, and 15 amp connectors all use the same size housing, so yes, they can be interconnected.

  • Where can one order the proper wire for this application? I have wire but not red and black.. Would like to have the correct gauge.

  • would it be wise to just put dabs of super glue ever couple inces of wire instead of having to shrink wrap?

  • @USNERDOC Thank you!
