A derailment occured at Chelmsford's railway station on October 22nd 1969 when a Class 37 locomotive hauling 27 short wheel base wagons containing military ordnance from Basingstoke to Felixstowe docks became derailed very late in the evening whilst travelling through the station at 42mph. The driver of the derailed train was Sid Brooks.

This is the only derailment to occur at the station since 1842 when the railway was built.
