This is one of the great songs of early rock. It's the Shirley and Lee 1956 song, not the Ray Charles different composition. Written by Leonard Lee.
This is my search for the definitive rendition. I find Shirley's voice too high-pitched in the original. I've just discovered that they rerecorded it in 1960, and I wonder what that's like.
I want a strong full arrangement with a strong voice.

1) Roy Orbison - 1965 Monument non-hit single
2) Freddie Fender - unknown origin
3) Conway Twitty - from his rock album "R&B '63" on MGM

I would have liked to hear Jerry Lee Lewis do a full-fledged recording. But he only did the Ray Charles song on the Sun label.
Some later rock group like The Rolling Stones might have done it justice if it wasn't a sloppy job. There are other compositions with this title that some have done.

  • 3 versions but no one is the original version...why??

  • @barnaba1964 Koz this is in addition ...

  • A very good job comparing these different version, quite unusual in you tube. The Sam Cook's version is very similar but is more blues-oriented, the same as the Rolling Stones (my favorite). Thanks GSilver!!!!

  • Thanks. Sam Cooke and the Stones are singing a different song - "Good Times". I want more hard rock bands to do this one here.

  • The same song was recorded by Smokie!! Before they became Smokie, during the Kindness time. Their version is absolutely amazing! You have to listen!

  • The 1960 version by Shirley & Lee on Warwick is not very much fun at all. Shirley's vocal acrobatics all but ruins the song. I'm not usually negitive, but this time I have no choice.

  • @GSMusicMoments No actually the correct name for the Cars is "Good Times Roll".

  • @NascarGoose That's a third completely different song with the same title.

  • @GSilverWorld It wasn't the wrong search. I searched Let The Good Times Roll, by The Cars, but the first video was one with three songs by the name "Let The Good Times Roll". And guess what, none of the three beat the Cars' version.

  • its all about The Sonics' version

  • @NascarGoose You should give yourself a knuckle in the head for not doing the search right, not to me.

  • The version I grew up with was the fantasic Bunny Sigler, a massive soul dance club number. Check it out!!
