Part 3 of Cintas Chairman, Dick Farmer giving a speech at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH as part of the university's Distinguished Speakers Series on April 18, 2008. After giving the speech, it was announced that the business ethics school would be renamed the Cintas Institute for Business Ethics.
In Part 3, Dick Farmer talks about decision #3, his decision to go out on his own. Dick branched out from the family business and formed a new company called Satellite Corporation, which would later become Cintas Corporation. Dick Farmer sought to open uniform rental shops in every city in the US as fast as they could in order to exploit their competitive advantage. Dick Farmer learned how to manage a decentralized, rapidly growing business.
Dick then gets into decision #4, "our vision for the future". "People always acuse me of being a dreamer", Dick says. He always had these great ideas of what the company could become and communicated his vision so that everyone in the company could understand it.
Dick outlines 3 elements of his vision: 1 - Have a uniform rental operation in every city of the US; 2 - Provide high-end uniforms to people with needs different from those in work uniforms - casinos, cruise lines, airlines, and hospitality; 3 - After achieving the first 2, provide additional services to those customers beyond the uniform services.
