Retired US Army Captain E. Evans Kayser, Jr., receives the Silver Star Sept. 16, 2011, at the American Legion of Murrells Inlet, SC, after piloting his helicopter 44 years ago to save pinned down US soldiers in Vietnam for about 17 hours, half of which were in darkness. He received the Bronze Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with "V" device+29 oak-leaf clusters, Army Commendation with "V," National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Metal and Campaign Medal with 60 device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star. Capt. Kayser's friend, a fellow pilot who was there 44 years ago and received the Silver Star then, got the ball rolling again last year when they met in Georgia. Knowing Kayser's recommendation went in the same time--two weeks after the event-- started gathering the necessary documentation and re-submitted it to Congressman Tim Scott's office. He said he flew an estimated 15 to 18 hours once his helicopter reached the conflict of which at least 10 hours were in darkness. Growing up as a Boy Scout, Capt. Kayser achieved Life Scout status.
