North Korea has for decades played a carefully calibrated game of provocation to squeeze concessions from the international community, today that trend amplifies. Now, on November 23rd 2010 ,North Korea has stepped up its aggression on the disputed maritime border, killing 2 S.Korean military members and injuring more than 20 others. After 80 or more rounds fired by the North, and 90 fired by the south, there are treats being exchanged and an eerie silence in Yeonpyrong. This comes as a response the S.Koren confronting the North for its shelling off the coast of Yeonpyeong brought on by a US/ South Korea military display, which itself was an admonitory response to the South Korean ship sunk earlier in the year (March). All demonstrations have taken place on the disputed maritime border - a area of turmoil sense the end of the Korean War in 1953.
To understand the predicament taking place one must first translate the language and mind set of a totalitarian state. Control is key, the individual is negated for the whole of the party. Communism is often given this ideal, but this term is to often thrown around, it doesn't do justice to the state of North Korea - A State of Fear. So unequaled that only George Orwell's 1984 can paint a accurate picture of the pointlessness of life lead by one living in such conditions. The novel depicts an oligarchical state-controlled society where life in 'Oceanian' is a world of perpetual war, encroaching government surveillance, and unremitting public mind control.
However, even 1984 cannot comprehensively describe N. Korea, as in 1984, no religion exists. Oceanian is a seemingly secular state, where as the 'Great Leader' in N.Korea is a actual God. Contrary to popular belief, Kim Jong-il is not the president of N. Korea, that position belongs to his father, the 'Great Leader' Kim Il-sung, who died in 1994.
This is a chilling case, as North Korea possess, and actively threatens its enemies with Nuclear war. The Perpetual, never ending war that Orwell speaks is amplified in the North with the possession of nuclear weapons. But one must think, if this is the type of propaganda that they release to the world, what are they telling their own civilians? People dominated by the regime have already developed physical abnormality brought on by widespread famine, such as stunted growth, wittered appearance, and isolated ideologies.
All to common are pictures of the 'Dear Leader', every aspect of daily life domineered by his presence. Citizens are further encouraged by daily sessions of 'Hate Speech' towards countries they are told they are at war with. Where ill talk of the Leader can make people go mute, stricken with fear. Where you don't know if your daughter will make it home from school, or where your entire family can be persecuted for your actions, if you are found on the wrong side of the party. "Free-Peoples" of the world could not live a day under such conditions.... yet we let Kim Jong-Il inflict some of the worst acts of inhumanity ever witnessed...
One day we will have to address this 2nd world regime of a tyranny, but today, we are to preoccupied to think of the threat in the pacific...The USSR was at one point the only 2nd world country, during the Cold-War, could we be about to relive history?
