One thing no one has pointed out is that the Harahumara shoes shown here and elsewhere are just slightly short of the toes in front. I think that's important, as it allows toes to grasp and bend without running into the sole of the shoe.

Ok Ted. I just read McDougall's "Born to Run" and liked how he portrayed you in the book. I am an expat American living in Switzerland. I want a pair of these sandals. How do I get them or how can I start a distributorship. I have been running for fourty years (since running track in high school) and for the past two weeks have been running in an OLD pair of hard rubber sneakers with NO pain and 2 hours at a pop! A Miracle!!! I need these sandals! I also like your vids!

Does the extra material at the top of the sandal protect his ankle or is this just tradition?

Good question.
Actually, it is just how they take care of extra lace when the have a longer (new) lace. Over time it wears out and the ankle wrap becomes less and less.
