@NotAfraid2Tim1 I heard at first it was a poem, and then the author asked ms Holiday to sing it. So she is the first singer, but not the writer. Ugh, can't tell you who the author was, but not hard to find. There you go, Abel Meeropol, aka "Lewis Allan".
