I reckon Grandpa was RIGHT all these years later, and I will bet good money that when folks approach John's family nowadays to tell them what John's music means to them the last thing on their mind at that moment is his drinking and temper, period.

To your comment on John's personal life, I will respond with what my wise old grandfather told me years ago, as he lay dying from TB:"Before you die, strive to create at least one thing of lasting beauty or importance that will touch the lives of as many folks as is humanly possible. to be fair if john martyn wasn't how he was, wasn't an alchoholic didnt have all his woman problems. would have music like this?? no one if perfect ever1 has flaws but john's music ability was perfect if not sure dam close!!
