Are we in a Deaf or Hearing World?

One of my high school teachers always favored the deaf students, not hard of hearing students. I never understood that, and it hurt my feelings because without my hearing aids i am practically deaf. I am very oral so most people would not notice unless i started signing. My hearing is getting worse so i will probably end up being more fluent in sign language. Though no one in my family will learn sign language & i don't have a lot of deaf friends since i moved to norcal in 2004.

I'm pretty sure the dichotomy lies in the language barrier. Many deaf people can't talk or lip read, and many hearing people can't sign. Thus, to keep it convenient, a 'deaf world' comes into play. That language barrier only exists between deaf and hearing - not blind and seeing, black and white etc.

Thank you for making this response to my video. You made my point exactly. Thank you for your thoughts!

Hey there! Surfing the Web, and came to this chat late... I looked up "World" in an online dictionary, and there are actually 15 different meanings.
Here # 8-10;
8: A realm or domain.
9: A sphere of human activity or interest.
10: People with common characteristics or pursuits.
I like to imagine something like that bar scene in the first Star Wars: Just because we may come from different worlds, we can still get together for a fabulous party (even 'droids)!

cool.... never thought of that..... we always said Deaf World but I didnt think more of that, just thought seperate from Hearing world but as you pointed out that other people (jews, blacks, etc) never said world. so thought should say Deaf community or Deaf culture or sign language culture or what suits best. sure it did impact me to think differently now. cheers
I am totally in the middle, I'm a half-breed, which is hard. I am not in either. I have been told by both that I don't belong.

Hey RiverBirch1967!
Anybody who told you that you do not belong to one or the other, they are just bunch of idiots. Don't let 'em get to you! :-)

I was told by the president of the local chapter of an association for hearing loss that I will need to chose to be in the hearing world, hard-of-hearing world, or the Deaf world after I have my audiology tests on November 5 and get the results.
Really??? THREE worlds??? How do I choose one? Which of the three worlds should I go to? DIFFICULT question!
I didn't know there were THREE worlds.

Hey I don't think the presdient of the local chapter of an association is very brilliant. I can't believe that person actually told you to make A choice. There is no such thing as 2 worlds, 3 worlds and so on. When I visited Nicaragua, I was welcomed into their culture and community so I did not feel being in different world just cuz I don't speak spanish. :-) So, yes you are welcome in our community no matter what. Feel free to send the president this video and see what they have to say. :-D

whay about rainbow world and stright world ?? u forget said something huh ?

LOL, your question cracked me up "rainbow world" that'd be awesome because rainbow is just so damn beautiful. But seriously, there is no such thing as that. There are two different definition of worlds. So therefore, I was talking about cultures in video which there is no reason to separate us from hearing. Hella, we need them for interpreters, relay operators and everything you name it. So, we are in ONE world.
To answer your question, I did not forget a thing.. huh.
