Merrigong Theatre Company's Season 2012 features exciting new theatre works, Australian and international classics, Merrigong's own in-house production and performances from some of the country's finest actors and theatre companies.

"Exhilarating", is how Merrigong Theatre Company's Artistic Director / CEO Simon Hinton describes the Company's Season 2012. "It's filled with work that will lift us from our day-to-day lives - transport us, thrill us, amuse us, open our minds, strengthen us."

The season begins with two Australian classics - The Boys, a searing exposé of the violent heart of Australian male culture, revisited a generation after it first exploded onto the Sydney stage; and Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, a play that in the 1950s began the defining of an Australian theatre.

The Company will present an exceptional selection of international theatre in 2012, including a smash-hit all-male Pirates of Penzance direct from London. Hinton says "Gilbert and Sullivan's incomparably silly The Pirates of Penzance is the very model of a madcap, musically joyous romp." Another highlight will be the visit from UK actress Miriam Margolyes to Wollongong. As 2012 marks the 200th birthday of English playwright Charles Dickens, the season will feature Margolyes in Dickens' Women. Merrigong is producing the Australian tour of Scotland's renowned Traverse Theatre Company's Midsummer (a play with songs), a quirky, charming musical that was originally a hit at the Edinburgh Festival.

The Company's artistic arm continues to go from strength to strength. Hinton says "It's the first time that The Traverse has toured Australia, and we're extremely pleased to be bringing them not only to Wollongong, but to some other great companies -- Sydney Theatre Company, Brisbane's La Boite and Canberra Theatre Centre.

"We've commissioned Marcel Dorney to write a new full-length work, Charcoal Creek, an exquisitely written play set in the Illawarra of the 1870s that will open in Wollongong in June.
"We're also pleased to be supporting (alongside Malthouse Theatre and Griffin Theatre Company) the production of Ride On Theatre's The Story of Mary MacLane by Herself." This production will feature original music composed and performed by Tim Rogers, frontman of the popular Australian band You Am I.

Towards the end of the year, there are some classic works that are all very different examples of comedy. Hinton says: "Moliere's brilliant The School For Wives reminds us of the debt we owe him for showing us just how funny theatre can be; and Noël Coward's Private Lives is a testament to how witty words can be in the hands of a master of our language."

There are some wonderful productions for families such as The Gruffalo's Child and The Bugalugs Bum Thief, that will bring the magic of theatre to the youngest members of our community. The annual South Coast Children's Festival returns in 2012 with inspiring, creative activities, workshops and some of the country's best theatre for children.
