I believe that shinto is not Japan's national religion. I have never had a Japanese friend who says that they even know what their national religion or shinto is.

He lied about injuries. His motives aren't important. Sumo is closely tied to Shinto, the national religion, and Shinto (as well as Sumo) traditions are incredibly specific. Lying is bad. Terrible. It's amazing how many 'stupid jap' comments I've read on this - as though the culture of polite restraint, discipline, and respect that is part of the culture is something to be looked down upon. Asa is a Yokozuna. A great amount of responsibility goes with that. He chose to gaff it off.

i think most of the japaneses hate asahoryu because hes a mongilian and not a japanese! only because hes the best and nearly unbeatable the japanese dont allow him all his titles!! its a shame the japanese media destroy asahoryu in the public, or can you imagine that roger federer would benn suspended only because he was filmed in a benefits soccer tournament..NO! this only happaned because sumo isnt so popular as tennis. poor asashoryu is a victim of his own sucsess!!!
