How To Brew Beer At Home - pt 6 - Sanitizing The Bottles

This step is mandatory before filling the bottles if you have not sterilized your bottles. I did both to be extra cautious.

  • If you haven't already, you should pick up John Palmer's book How to Brew. You can read the first edition for free online, just go to howtobrewDOTcom

Like you, when I started brewing (about 9 years ago), I ended up listening to the local home brew shop owners' advice (they didn't know what they were talking about), and ended up ruining some batches. I ended up reading some books (Brewing for Dummies, Home Brewers Companion, How to Brew), and learned just how wrong they were. :)

  • Yeah I'm definatly giong to do that. There has been way too much incorrect information and such going around on these things.

  • This is what annoys me about these brew shops, they don't seem to have a clue when it comes to beer. Sodium Metabisulphite is WINE stabilizer/sanitizer, it is not strong enough for beer. I believe it has some something to do with wine PH level.

Pick up some Star San or Iodophor, these are true no rinse sanitizers; iodophor has been a cornerstone for the brew and dairy industry for decades.

  • Yes! That's what it was called. People were saying on the forums that Star San is the only true no rinse sanitizer.

The guy at the brew store said that the sodium meta was 'the no rinse' sanitiser that eveyone uses. Then ANOTHER brew store I went to said the same thing.

  • huh, interesting. yea, i was under the impression that it would kill the yeast, but i'm not 100% sure on that

  • Yeah me too. I even called the guy at the local brew place and asked him right before we did it. He said that's the only one he ever uses. He also said that he uses 40x the normal amount. He said that 'when it comes to brewing beer, there's some things you should worry about, the sodium metabisulphate isn't one of them.

But I COULD smell it off the bottles so half way through decided that I better be safe and not use it.

I guess we'll see what happenes tommorow =)

  • @PeiHomeBrewer I got alot of very unhelpful advice for one local brew shop.

  • How do you sterilize the bottle caps?

  • Did you notice a difference with the bottles that were not rinsed when drinking out of them?

  • Who is that rapping at the end of your video? Thats some bad ass intro music for a slice of pizza. I laughed my ass off.

  • Iodophor is another true no rinse sanitizer, but it does have the disadvantage of staining plastic if left too long. It also has a longer contact time, 2 minutes opposed to Star San's 30 seconds.

I use Iodophor because it is dirt cheap and lasts a long time. If you have trouble finding this stuff, let me know; there is some Canadian online retailers I can send you the links to.
